How are the Chinese soldiers portrayed in these prints? The Japanese soldiers? In the prints, Chinese are portrayed evil, servile, and weak. Most of the Chinese that are portrayed are laid on the ground or bending their knees. Also the Chinese have ugly faces. They are portrayed negatively. In the other hand, the Japanese are portrayed positively. They are handsome. Also they are standing in a brave position which makes them look like a hero. Even though there are bullets, it never hits the Japanese in these prints. The kindness are also portrayed by Japanese protecting a kid or helping other people.
Look at the weapons used by each side, are they different? How? Does this tell us anything about Japanese technological advancement?
Japanese are using swords, but they also use guns. In some prints, there are also using bombs. The chinese also use guns, but they mostly use spears or undeveloped weapons. The guns and cannons show that that the Japanese had technological advancement against the Chinese.
Why do sports often become symbolic battlegrounds between nations?
Sports, especially the competitive sports, verse each teams. Most sports verse each other by team to team. When one nation verse another nation, it becomes a competition between the two nation. Because these sport events have winning and losing, the nationalist mind of people make it symbolize a battleground. .Why does this matter to a people? What do they find so gratifying in the experience of witnessing their team beat another on the arena of sport?
Is imperialism/colonialism simply about militarily and politically controlling another nation, or is it also about proving one’s self-perceived cultural superiority over another? Japan’s view of imperialism/colonialism was proving its strength over other countries. Japan made unequal treaties similar to the ones that Japan had with other Western countries. Japan justified colonizing Korea as giving Korea independence from China. However, instead of giving independence, Japan ruled over Korea. This shows that Japan’s imperialism/colonialism was about militarily and politically controlling another nation.
Russo-Japanese War
Do artistic renditions or photographs depict the heroics of war better?
The block prints shows the heroics of war better. However, still I can see the propaganda purposes in these pictures. For example, in a print where the japanese red-cross soldiers are curing the russian soldiers, there is a small block where it shows the russian soldiers killing the Japanese soldiers. This comparison makes the Japanese to be shown more heroic.
Do artistic renditions or photographs depict the horrors of war better? (Consider all photographs of war that you have seen, both historical and contemporary)
Yes, the photographs and the block prints depict the horrors of war better. Through the photographs and videos, I can see corpse laying on the battle field. Also people are taking photos to celebrate their victories above the corpses they just killed. These scenes seems mad and scary and it reflects the reality of the war well. Unlike the block prints, it shows the real situation despite the fact that it was taken for propaganda purposes.
Yes, we can say that the medium is the message. Through the block prints, photos and videos, people who are not involved in the war can see what is happening. Also these people can get an idea of what the war is like. Through these methods, the military can earn supports and convince the civilians that the war is for good purposes and the soldiers are fighting for justice.
Why is 1905 such a turning point in Japanese and World history? How might history have been different had Japan lost the Russo-Japanese War?
1905 is a turning point in Japanese and World history because Japan finally got what they wanted. They finally were treated as equal as any other Western countries. This victory against the Russians proved their strength; the strength that can compete with any other western countries. If Japan had not on this war, Japan would have signed more unequal treaties and lose all the strength they had built up to compete with the western countries.
